Atoms are the components that make up the elements. They consist of a nucleus containing combinations of neutrons and protons and one or more electrons bound to the nucleus by electrical attraction; the number of protons determines the identity of the element.
Functions of the Atom:
Acts as the basic building blocks for everything else in the universe.
Held together by the STRONG force and the Electromagnetic force to allow objects larger than one atom to exist and not fall apart.
Vibrations of the atom generate what we know as heat.
